Giving Thanks for Games (a holiday session report)

My family celebrated Christmas over Thanksgiving this year (long story), so all of us descended on my aunts' house for four days of food, togetherness, and... gaming.

My family has always enjoyed playing games together--first trick-taking games like Pinochle and Rook, then party games like Scattergories and Rapid Recall, and now hobby games, beginning with Acquire. There were fifteen of us at the gathering, and we played a lot of games over the four days. I usually list what I've been playing in the weekly news, but I thought I'd write a separate post since several of these are new, and I'd prefer to treat them in more depth. So here's what we played.

A Weekend to Remember

This past weekend was Memorial Day Weekend, a time for remembering those who fought in our country's wars and did not come home.  Pushing past all the hype, the free day off of work, and the excited commercialism, most of us celebrate the day by spending time with our families.  And spending time with family is a great time to bring out the board games.

Anyways, I had a pretty game-filled weekend, so why not a little recap, starting all the way back last thursday? 

One Ring to Rule Them All...

This is where it all starts.

I recently got a chance to play the recently released second edition of War of the Ring. While this is not a review—I'd hate to base my opinions of a game on a single play, especially a game as epic as this—I thought I'd share a little on what went down. If you're a Lord of the Rings fan, if you're interested in the game but not sure if it's worth your money, or if you know you will never be able to fit this into your gaming budget (whether of time or money), read on, friend! Allow me to share the wonder with you.

Cause for Giving Thanks

This weekend my wife and I traveled all across the state of Indiana to visit our families for Thanksgiving. We caught up with family members, ate great food, and of course, played some games. Here's a recap of the games I played and what I thought about them.
